“Creative from Vienna to the world" : reflections on a feminist transnational and collaborative design history from Central Europe to America

| Popis | This contribution offers a critical reflection on the multi-platform event “Creativity from Vienna to the World,” held in spring 2023. Its goal was to highlight the achievements of migrant women designers who moved to the United States from Central Europe during the first half of the twentieth century. The series explored how ideas on design and pedagogy rooted in Central Europe—particularly within the progressive Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna—were developed and shared by women designers who started second careers in the United States after emigrating. Drawing on several case studies introduced in the series, including Emmy-Zweybrück-Prochaska, Liane Zimbler, and Lisl Weil, the contribution examines issues of transnationalism, transculturalism, and media hierarchy in their work. By emphasizing their collaborations, networks, and under-explored areas of design history, like pedagogy and creative exchange, the essay investigates how design history can be shaped with a focus on women as key figures. Instead of simply trying to include women into an existing design history and cultural canon, the contribution builds on topics from the seminar series—such as inter-generational and transnational collaboration, creative partnerships, feminist networks, and the role of pedagogy in design practice and reinvention through migration—to develop a new, feminist approach that emphasizes interdisciplinary frameworks and collaboration as central elements. |
