From Gaps to Bridges: How Twinning Builds RMA Networks and Research Excellence

| Popis | Did you know that Research Managers and Administrators can be active partners — not just supporters — in EU projects? Horizon Europe Twinning strengthens research and innovation capacity in widening countries by fostering long-term collaboration with advanced partners. These partnerships benefit both sides: widening partners gain new expertise, methodologies, and resources, while collaborating partners gain fresh perspectives, innovative approaches, and broader professional networks. Twinning is not only valuable for researchers. It also empowers RMAs, who play a critical role in enabling research excellence, improving institutional processes, and supporting the development of new project proposals. This presentation draws on the experience of the CENTREPEACE project, which connects RMAs from Czechia (Masaryk University), Norway (Peace Research Institute Oslo), and Finland (University of Helsinki). Through targeted mobilities, co-created events, and structured skills development, CENTREPEACE has driven institutional change, built sustainable networks, and created opportunities for deeper exchange of good practices. These activities go far beyond what short-term programmes like ERASMUS+ or conference networking can achieve, allowing for meaningful collaboration and the practical application of shared knowledge. Examples include thematic workshops on impact, academic writing, and gender, as well as joint exploration of new project development. We will present these activities, share lessons learned, and provide participants with concrete ideas for designing and implementing RMA-focused initiatives within Twinning projects. Our case shows that Twinning is a strategic tool not only for strengthening research support services, but also for building equal partnerships and accelerating institutional growth across Europe — by empowering both widening and collaborating institutions. |
