| Popis | This paper examines the role of the Visegrad Group (V4) countries – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – in shaping the EU’s Strategic Compass for security and defence. It examines the V4’s alignment on defence priorities and reveals divergent national positions on strategic autonomy and definitions of the security environment. Although historically effective in defence cooperation, the V4 has shown limited coherence in EU-level coordination throughout the development of the Strategic Compass, influenced by divergent national policies and geopolitical perspectives. The paper argues that the lack of structured coordination and joint diplomatic initiatives weakened the collective influence of the V4. This analysis adds to the literature on sub-regional cooperation by suggesting that internal institutional fragility and domestic political divergence limit the potential of the V4 as a cohesive security bloc. |
