Conceptualising participatory atrocity tourism: Sarajevo's alleged ‘sniper tourism’

| Popis | This article uses recent, contested allegations of ‘sniper tourism’ during the siege of Sarajevo as an illustrative case context to examine the limits of existing tourism concepts. It develops participatory atrocity tourism (PAT) as tourist-like mobility in which direct involvement in atrocity is the core ‘experience product’, and treats documentary, journalistic, and legal material as secondary case material rather than as proof that the alleged practices occurred. The guiding question is: how should tourism scholarship conceptualise tourist-like participation in atrocity? Using Jaakkola's (2020) theory synthesis/adaptation approach and Lukka and Vinnari’s (2014) domain–method theory distinction, the article mobilises thanatology and atrocity studies as domain theories, while dark tourism, atrocity heritage, collective memory, and affective/conflict-zone tourism are used as analytical lenses. It advances propositions that sharpen the scope of dark/thanatourism, link atrocity production to atrocity heritage within a single trajectory, and integrate perpetrator and empathy perspectives into tourism scholarship. |
