Popis The presence of fungal species in indoor environments is an increasing concern due to their potential effects on human health. Although ventilation systems are essential for thermal comfort and air exchange, they can also serve as reservoirs and dispersal routes for microorganisms, including micromycetes (kingdom Fungi). The growing number of infections caused by micromycetes—particularly in immunocompromised individuals—can manifest in various clinical forms, such as aspergillomas, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, invasive aspergillosis, pneumonitis, and other severe diseases. This issue is especially pronounced in older residential buildings with natural ventilation, where accumulated dust and moisture create favorable conditions for fungal growth. Despite the prevalence of such buildings in Central Europe, including the Czech Republic, comprehensive data on their mycobiome remain scarce. To address this gap, this study characterizes fungal communities in ventilation systems of prefabricated panel buildings using both culture-based and DNA-based methods, while assessing spatial and seasonal variations in community composition. Dust samples were collected from ventilation systems in several older panel buildings across eight Czech cities during different seasons. The most abundant genus detected in all samples was Cladosporium, with an average relative abundance of 15.7%, reaching up to 63% in some cases. Cultivation yielded 45 isolates, primarily from the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Cladosporium, confirming the viability of micromycetes within these systems. These findings underscore the potential health risks associated with micromycetes in ventilation systems.
