| Popis | This article examines the transformation of Mediterranean travel in the early nineteenth century, focusing on how evolving archaeological practices and imaginative engagement reshaped the experience of visiting ancient sites. It argues that, alongside improved transport and shifting travel motivations, new archaeological methods and narrative strategies turned places like Pompeii into emotionally and aesthetically charged environments. The study explores how literary and visual culture reimagined ruins as dynamic spaces of historical and emotional projection, where imagination blurred the boundaries between past and present. Pompeii emerges not only as a site of excavation but as a stage for sensory, poetic, and affective encounters with antiquity. By analysing how the fragmented materiality of the site inspired reconstructions through vision and feeling, the article highlights imagination as an active force in shaping perceptions of place. It contributes to broader discussions on mobility and heritage, showing how early nineteenth-century archaeological tourism transformed the experience of movement through the Mediterranean landscape. |
