| Popis | Oswald Veblen (1880–1960) joined the Princeton University Department of Mathematics in 1905 and quickly became a consequential member of the faculty. Promoted to professor in 1910, he influenced personnel, curricula, and the mathematical culture at Princeton. In particular, he provided a broad overview of the field of mathematical sciences and sense for new topics that would become important in addition to contributing to the rise of Princeton as a center for mathematical research on both American and international scales by the 1930s. In this paper, we connect Veblen’s research to the day-to-day activities of the Princeton mathematics department to describe some of the ways in which he helped build mathematics at Princeton before 1932, when he retired to take a position at the newly created Institute for Advanced Study. By exploiting Princeton University newspapers and course catalogs in addition to Veblen’s scientific correspondence, we illuminate how Veblen created the practical conditions within which research could be done and marketed mathematics as a discipline to the next generation of students. |
