Popis Three-dimensional (3D) facial reconstruction combines scientific accuracy with creative interpretation, offering new ways to visualise and understand historical individuals. Virtual reconstruction methods have proven valuable for both research and education by enabling the efficient creation of realistic digital faces. The study explores how inherent uncertainty influences reconstruction outcomes and examines how virtual reconstruction approaches can improve the communication of this uncertainty to the public. The research uses the case of Jobst of Moravia (1354–1411), a prominent member of the House of Luxembourg who served as Margrave of Moravia from 1375. Three facial reconstructions were created using the Blender software based on the same underlying skull model, with BMI-derived soft tissue thickness values serving as one branching point in the reconstruction workflow. The resulting models were analysed using the FIDENTIS Analyst software and ArcFace algorithm to assess their geometric similarity. The three resulting reconstructions illustrate the extent to which outcomes produced by a single expert, working from the same underlying skull, may vary as a consequence of decisions made throughout the reconstruction process, from an initial and inherently subjective choice of reference soft tissue thickness values to subtle local variations introduced during facial modelling. Even from the perspective of biometric methods, the faces were not consistently assessed as belonging to the same individual. By enabling unlimited reproducibility and branching of alternative reconstruction scenarios at critical decision points, virtual reconstruction approaches may contribute to a more transparent communication of the inherent uncertainty associated with the method.
