Werner and Demo Gave Their Public Lectures

Both MUNI Award in Science and Humanities candidates gave their public lectures. Norbert Werner in astrophysics, Gabriel Demo in structural biology.

Norbert Werner talked about how to build up space-based high-energy astrophysics. He emphasized that Brno has ideal conditions for the development of this research including the application possibility and outreach. Werner is a leader of a research group at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary and a specially appointed associate professor in the School of Science at Hiroshima University in Japan. He is mainly interested in the hot atmospheres of galaxies and clusters of galaxies, black hole feedback, and in the use of nano-satellites in astrophysics.

Gabriel Demo followed with crosstalk between transcription and translation. He recently became a leader of a new research group at CEITEC MU after returning from the United States where he spent 5 years as a postdoctoral researcher. Demo’s main fields of research interest are bacterial infection, translation control, and RNA biology and he plans to establish an interdisciplinary research team that will focus on analysing the molecular details of the coupled transcriptional-translational apparatus in bacteria and virus-infected cells.

ISAB Final Report

After visiting Masaryk University, members of the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) introduced their strategic recommendations for the upcoming period. In their final report, they focus primarily on the quality of doctoral studies, international rankings, MUNI brand presentation and university funding.

New Subject for PhD Students FRESHERS: Skills for Research Career Launched

The FRESHERS course replaces the PREFECT course, which was offered to Ph.D. students and junior researchers at Masaryk University from 2014 to 2019.

FRESHERS is primarily intended for Ph.D. students who are interested in the topics that Ph.D. students and young scientists face at the beginning of their scientific careers. The course aims to offer a general overview of topics such as the possibilities of foreign exchanges within the framework of Ph.D. studies, preparation and funding of research projects, publication ethics, science and research results communication, intellectual property, etc.  Thus, the skills and abilities of young scientists useful for international projects and research structures should be gained and strengthened.

These general lectures will be followed by expanding WORKSHOPS, where all these topics will be discussed in more depth and on a practical level. FRESHERS workshops will be realized through the project of the Internal Grant Agency of Masaryk University (IGA MU). Ph.D. students will be then able to apply for a student grant within this project. More information about the Workshops here.
