Supercomputing center Brno, part associated to Masaryk university, currently operates a 12CPU computer POWER Challenge as its main compute intensive server. This computer is open to all interested parties from academic environment of Universitites andInstitutes of Academy of Science CR. Recently, this computer, used for research purposes only, is with the 100% use of each CPU fully overloaded - the mean waiting period for a job after submission to be started on a CPU is one or more weeks. The aim of the SCB-MU project is substantial increase of the center computational power through installation of new, in the final state 16CPU computer Origin 2000 from SGI/Cray. This computer will become a new node of the MetaCenter and will be also opento all academics interested in high performance computing. The development environment for parallel and distributed computing available on this computer will be complemented by application software with the emphasis on computational chemistry and physics.
