The subject matter of the project is to capture one of the essential effects of the medieval urbanization, i.e. the development of zoning and use of space within one urban block, the so-called Velký Špalíček in Brno, that has been thoroughly explored from the archaeological and building-recording perspective. The goal of the project is to elucidate the process of formation of the royal city of Brno in the period of the Middle Ages (from the 12th to the end of the 15th century). On the basis of finds, primarily from waste pits, we will follow the main
trends of changes in the spheres of material culture. The achieved results will be confronted with examples from the Czech-speaking countries and the Central Europe. By a confrontation with information on the holders and tenants of tenements in the 14th and 15th century a social testimony of certain artefacts or their collections will be tested. A partial goal of the project is an attempt at the reconstruction of the medieval building development and dividing into lots resulting in the possible appearance of the house block a) in the period after the foundation of the city, b) as of the half of the 14th scentury, c) in the late Middle Ages. The main output of the project will be represented a monograph with an operative title „Velký Špalíček in Brno. Houses, lots and
their inhabitants in the Middle Ages“.
