The output of the submitted project will be a book containing a selection of articles and studies by Jaroslav Bakala on the beginnings of towns and on the character of medieval settlements in the Moravian-Silezian borderland. The need to publish the abov e material resulted from the fact that expert opinion has for many years appreciated the high level of Bakala's research, as well as the many times original interpretation of facts pertaining to the respective historical context. However, many of J. Baka la's articles appeared in specialised publications with a regional impact only. As a result, access to some of his writings has been difficult. The planned miscellany is a response to the steady interest of expert public in J. Bakala's work. It should by pointed out, however, that the publication will not be based on mere transcription of older works of the author. The project counts on critical comments to accompany Bakala's earlier studies.
