The project is focused on diversity and activity of soil microbial communities in terrestrial ecosystems stressed by heterogeneous environmental mixture of persistent organic pollutants - POPs. Norway spruce forests (autochtonous and monocultures) and al luvial meadows are proposed as model ecosystems allowing selection of comparable sites with different level of pollution. The main questions to be answered are: (1) are expected deleterious changes in microbial activities mainly metabolic reflections or consequences of genotypic/structural shifts within the community and (2) as evaluated from microbiological viewpoint, what is the toxic potential of POPs released through decomposition of contaminated plant residues? Microbial diversity and functionality (microbial biomass, mineralization tests, structural diversity - PL-FAs pattern, DNA heterogeneity) will be evaluated both in seasonal soil samples and in designed factorial experiments with soil monoliths (long-term incubations: up to 2 years).
