Description A number of new diagnostic methods have been introduced in the field of medical mycology during the last decades, first and foremost the molecular-biological methods and mass spectrometry. Unfortunately, these methods have a number of limitations, primarily the cost of the equipment and the necessity of time-consuming and expensive preparation of samples. Another disadvantage that merits mentioning is their destructive character: the tested microorganisms do not survive the procedure and therefore cannot be further analysed. The above mentioned limitations mean that new methods and procedures are being sought, that would appropriately complement or replace existing methods. There are a number of methods that have the potential for practical use in medical microbiology. Chemical-analytical methods known as capillary electrophoresis and spectrometric methods, namely Raman spectroscopy, are among the most promising ones. Their main advantages include short analysis time (15-30 minutes), the fact that they are non-destructive and that it is possible to automate or convert them to a microchip form.
