Description This study presents a preliminary assessment of swords from the 11th–13th centuries unearthed on Moravian territory. Emphasis is placed on the classification of the specimens and their comparison with finds from Europe published so far, on the basis of which the individual items are dated. With selected swords, this classification has been supplemented with metallographic analysis elucidating the construction of their blades, which enables further comparisons. The total of 11 swords and their parts from the mentioned period have been uncovered in Moravia. They include some rare and unique examples expanding the current typological systems. Further clues can be derived from the spatial distribution of the finds. The majority of the weapons have been found in the vicinity of the period centres of power and by major communications, and can be thus, though hypothetically, identified as the weaponry of the highest strata of the medieval society.
