Description This paper discusses the influence of the main environmental factors on the species composition of the bryophyte layer on forest and subalpine springs in the Hrubý Jeseník Mts. The most important factors are chemical characteristics of the water (pH, conductivity), altitude and the orientation and slope of the hillside. We studied 64 forest and subalpine springs and described 133 taxa of bryophytes. We found out that these two types of bryophyte vegetation have different response to studied environmental factors. The structure of bryophyte communities on the forest springs is influenced by altitude and correlated water characteristics, particularly conductivity. On the other hand in case of subalpine springs the percentage of explained variability in species composition was quite low. The structure of bryophyte communities is probably influenced more by neutral processes or by some undescribed underlying environmental factors.
