Description Italy is one of the European countries with long emigration as well as immigration history. It is also one of the entrances into the Europe for people escaping mostly from African countries. Thousands of refugees come to the shores of Italy every year, but at the same time lots of those also die nearby these shores. The aim of the article is to present Italian immigration policy and the conditions for acquiring citizenship in this country. At the end there is a short reflection on the act of granting the refugee victims of the October´s tragedy nearby Lampedusa island with Italian citizenship after their death in the light of policies mentioned above and in the light of challenges Italy and the European Union face.
