Description Patients with diabetes mellitus form a large proportion of the patients seeing general practitioners. These days, most of the patients with diabetes are in fact diagnosed by CPs, often randomly. A CP should monitor and treat uncomplica¬ted cases of type 2 diabetes and to coordinate the care for these patients with other specialists. Complicated cases and patients with type 1 diabetes should be sent for monitoring at a specialised centre. In such cases, treatment of accompanying diseases and vaccination of the diabetic patients forms a part of the patient monitoring programme as well. In seniors, it is also important to factor in psychosocial influences and the influence of the family and other caregivers.
