Description | The first part of this study reviews some current critiques of the unacknowledged values and methodological limitations of mainstream economic theory (neoclassical synthesis economics). In the second part the focus is on a relatively new economic field, ecological economics, and its historical roots, more recent developments, and current tensions as ecological economics struggles to define itself vis a vis mainstream and environmental economics as well as other fields. We look especially at the efforts of some ecological economists to define a new coherent paradigm within what is now called social ecological economics. The last part of the text focuses on the issue of communal ownership of natural resources and compares critiques of Hardin´s tragedy of the commons from the perspective of institutional economics (Elinor Ostrom), ecological economics and some radical opponents of the mainstream development discourse. |
