Description The discussion paper highlights certain methodological and methodical weaknesses in Jiří Machaček's article on the possible nature of the power arrangement in Great Moravia. The work demonstrates that Machaček does not pay adequate attention to considerations other than economic factors in assessing the nature of the social-power arrangement in Great Moravia. Moreover, the author uses Machaček's own criteria to point out that it would be difficult on their basis to regard any Early Medieval monarchy as a state. Finally, the author shows that certain basic facts that Machaček considers solid are actually revealed to be invalid when confronted with sources. The author understands the downfall of Great Moravia above all as a crisis of solidarity among the elite, evoked by dynastic strife.
