Keywords British "writers from elsewhere"; Andrea Levy; Bernardine Evaristo
Description The ever-growing group of contemporary British "writers from elsewhere" is now in its second or third generation, writers brought up and educated in Britain, but still concerned with the clash of views of different cultures. The article focuses on Andrea Levy and Bernardine Evaristo to capture some of the rich variety of themes and attitudes involved. Levy confronts the black and white view of the Afro-Caribbean experience of post-war immigration into Britain, especially in her novel The Small Island (2004). Evaristo in Lara (1997) unravels her heroine's entangled African roots to make sense of her twentieth-century London identity. Evaristo's historical fantasy The Emperor's Babe (2002) is also situated in multicultural – here, Roman – Britain, and switches its various cultural codes in much the same way.
