Description | The qualitative research conducted with students training to become teachers in their second year of studies at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University in Brno (n=194) showed that the concept of the teaching processes is part of their professional self-concept. The open coding of free responses to the question How can student’s concept of teaching processes be characterised? rendered four main categories: (a) concept of the role of the teacher, which is connected to the concept of possible selves (Markus & Nurius, 1986; Erikson, 2007); (b) concept of students and their self-evaluation, the process of evaluation being seen as a key element in the teacher-student relationship; (c) concept of a lesson as a basic teaching unit and (d) concept of the subject through which the teacher may influence the students’ attitudes to learning. The results of the study suggest that pre-concepts or early concepts of teaching (Spilková, 2006) which students have at the beginning of their undergraduate studies bear a significant potential for the process of constructing their own conscious concept of teaching. This process should be supported by teacher trainers. |
