| Description | The aim of this review paper is to introduce fundamental concepts related to stigma in psychiatry and mental illness. Stigma is characterized within both, broader perspective of social sciences and narrower perspective specific to the field of mental health. In terms of mental health field, stigma is seen as a problem of knowledge, attitudes and bevavior. The role of social actors in the proces of stigmatization, the phenomenon of self-stigmatization, as well as possibilities of measuring and decreasing the level of stigmatization in society are all discussed. Special attention is given to the context of the Czech Republic. |
