Description The method enables retrospective bioindication of dry episodes in stream history based on the analysis of taxonomical and functional composition of aquatic macroinvertebrate samples (macrozoobenthos), which are used for the assessment of ecological status/potential of water bodies in running waters. The method is applicable for bioindication of drying up of water courses from the 1st to the 4th Strahler order, during which the continuity of flow on the streambed surface was interrupted. The method comprises the calculation of biological metrics related to the drought duration and to the spatial extent of affected stretch, which enables to asses the magnitude of stream impairment by drought during the preceding vegetation season. The method is suitable for efficient evaluation of measures aimed at reduction of negative impacts of drought on water courses. This approach is quite novel since comparable method was not employed in the Czech Republic or even in Europe yet.
