Description The paper deals with several possibilities how time is expressed in German and Czech. Six main devices which human language uses to express time are the starting point for discussing the concept of time as a cognitive category. The interaction of various autosematic and synsemantic parts of speech with the verb for conveying temporal circumstances is briefly considered. Specific attention is paid to German present perfect tense in certain temporal subordinate clauses. The examples for various interpretations of the present perfect tense in German are called up from the DWDS-corpus. My concern is to demonstrate how a comparison of various syntactic structures in German and Czech can contribute to better understanding of the meaning of perfect aspect in both languages. For this purpose there are examined divers options how to translate German temporal clauses by means of Slavic perfect.
