Description The small intestine is the region of the digestive tract which remains poorly available for investigation of the microbiota. In healthy individuals, the low bacterial density and diversity of the small intestine reflect digestion and absorption, the main functions of the small intestine. Bacterial overgrowth may be accompanied by a wide range of digestive symptoms and by a malabsorption syndrome. SIBO is clinical syndrome characterized by bacterial overgrowth, the diagnosis is complicated as well as a treatment.
