Description The text presents one of the pillars of Butorian writing after the Nouveau Roman, namely innovative rewriting techniques, and demonstrates on the example of the first volume of the Illustrations cycle the progression of textual metamorphoses. In this experimental and poetic text, rewriting becomes the instrument of ekphrasis because the ultimate goal of Butor is to transpose the pictorial to the scriptural. In order to do so, he restores the Mallarmean tradition by accentuating the material quality of language and rejects the meaning of words by organizing them in the matrices which end in serial writing. Quotations thus lose their intertextual value and become a kind of textual material that must simulate shapes and colors.
