Description | This article describes and summarizes development, experiences and results of research in the area of music therapy and autism. Music therapy can be defined as a treatment that utilises music or musical elements with the aim of a fulfilment of physical, psychological and social needs of an individual. It is a commonly used treatment for those with autism in an international clinical practice. Music therapy in Czech Republic is diffused much less; there is a minimum of research activity and no reviews in the field. This article brings information from foreign literature: summarises the findings of reviews and their meta-analyses and elaborates three executed and one ongoing research study from the last period. The article analyses five research studies and five reviews, which reports the evidence of the effect of music therapy on the area of social interaction, eye contact and sharing attention, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, emotional expression; points out the motivational aspects of music as a communication mean and the effect on reduction of aggressive and problematic behaviour. |
