Description The paper deals with the issue of administrative regions from the point of view of their spatial efficiency. This approach takes the concept of a functional region as the basis for the assessment of spatial efficiency, particularly the self-containment of a functional region. In this respect the paper analyses three systems of administrative regions of the Czech Republic at lower hierarchical level and compares them to three systems of natural functional regions and two systems of approximated functional regions. The paper uses daily travel-to-work flows for the analysis. Spatial distribution of self-containment for administrative regions is commented and the suitability of functional region approach for administration of a territory is supported.
