Description Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are frequent in medical, as well as psychotherapeutic practice. This study seeks to answer the question of whether and to what extent psychotherapeutic methods are effective in the treatment of these disorders. Literature search revealed 44 available meta-analyses and reviews. Their results are synthesized separately for (1) MUPS and somatoform disorders, (2) fibromyalgia and chronic pain, (3) irritable bowel syndrome, and (4) chronic fatigue syndrome. It is concluded that psychotherapy is an effective in treating psychosomatic disorders. Furthermore, the authors outline possible directions for future research.
