Description In 626 there took place a great siege of Constantinople by the Avars and the Slavs. Byzantine Emperor Herakleios was not able to stay and defend its capital city with all means available, because he was facing an even more threatening menace from the East - the Sasanid Persian Empire. Constantinople was on its own, while his protection was based on mighty Theodosian walls and prayers of its inhabitants dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Avar siege failed in the end, even in spite of the fact that it lasted several months.
