Description Cardinal virtues, i. e. prudence, courage, temperance and justice, are the core of the Byzantine advisory and panegyric works. Accentuating or overshadowing some of those virtues, writers could confront the ruler’s deeds with the depiction of an ideal ruler and by means of subtle remarks guide his behavior. Several texts containing instructions for proper imperial conduct are dated to the Komnenian period, e. g. works of Leo of Chalcedon, Theophylact the Ohrid, John the Oxite or Vita of Cyril the Phileote. The aim of this contribution is to present those writings, analyze their conception of cardinal virtues in relation to the rules of rhetoric and historical background of the period.
