Description Barrett's esophagus is a term for a condition in which intestinal metaplasia occurs in the esophageal mucosa due to pathological reflux. This change is associated with an increased risk of developing oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus is currently based on endoscopy with histological examination of the biopsied material. Experimental, clinical and immunohistochemical studies have shown that one of the factors in the pathogenesis of Barrett's esophagus is duodenal reflux and the related synergistic damage to the esophagus due to bile acids and gastric acid in the refluxate.
