Description The QTc prolongation ant potentially fatal arrythmia may be induced by some psychotropic drugs. The aim of our project was to explore the occurence of QTc prolongation in psychiatric patients treated with a drug of known (or unexplored) proarrhytmic potential. Methods:the patient(male and female)hospitalised in the psychotic wards at the Department of Psychiatry treated with antipsychotics and antidepressants were included. A 12-lead ECG was recorded(sweep of 50 mm/s and voltage of 20 mm/mV), the QT interval was measured manually, corrected according to Bazett. QTc values of >0,46s in females were considered pathologic. Result: in 365 patients the total number of 457 ECGs were obtained. In 16 patients(4%) QTc prolongation was observed. Nevertheless, in none of them the QTc value exceeded 0,48 sec. Conclusions:The occurence of abnormal QTc was significantly lower than in available literature. Values associated with high risk of arrhythmias(QTc longer than 0.5 sec)were not observed. This could be connected with the change of spectrum of antipsychotics used, the general trend to use lower doses of antipsychotics and increasing awarennes about the long QT syndrome.
