Description The competitive position of certain transport mode in the transport market is influenced by many factors. Air transport competitiveness has been prominent in the segment of long-haul routes in the long term but it is growing in the segment of shorter trips (around 300 km) in the recent decades too. Passenger demad for these shorter trips is growing faster in Europe in the case of air transport than in the case of railways. The article deals with different aspects of air and railway transport competitiveness in theory and illustrates important features of European transport market with the empirical evidence.
