Description This work describes basic anatomical functional traits of xylem in adult hop plants grown in hop garden and shows functional links between structure, efficiency and safety of xylem transport. An important aim was also testing the methodology previously used nearly exclusively in woody plants on herbaceous stems of hop. The properties of xylem of annual hop stems are very similar to perennial woody stems of lianas. More detailed analysis of xylem functioning and factors limiting xylem transport in hop plants in the future can benefit from use of the same methodology as previously used for woody lianas.
