Description | Paper tries to point out problems of studying apostasy. This issue is also closely connected to keeping one's religious identity and its change. Social scientists concerned on conversion and de-conversion phenomena are trying to find kind of clear distinct visible manifestations and empirical indicators of both, but it is often hard to divide between conversion and apostasy. Also there is a problem to distinguish between "religious renegade" and "critic in own midst" and other types of apostates. Essay is based on qualitative research in Hare Krishna movement (ISKCON). The social character of religious identity plays main role in process of getting new and leaving the old one. There are important elements of changing identity and it's necessary to identify them for better understanding apostasy in religious groups. The main point of this article is concrete statements of Hare Krishna ex-members, which show us different ways of identity change. |
