Description Railway industry in the Czech Republic accumulates huge financial losses. Revenues are insufficient to cover all costs connected with railways operation and resulting losses are covered by public subsidies. The main causes of financial losses are high investment in infrastructure and loss making public service obligations in passenger transport. The total sum of public subsidies has reached 216 billions CZK in the period 2003-2008. The share of public subsidies to railways on GDP has risen from 0,97% GDP in 2003 to 1,60% GDP in 2008.
