How to maintain good mental health

You may have heard the phrase “mental hygiene”. It is simply a set of activities that can help you maintain good mental health. Taking care of your mental health is important at all times, regardless of the current situation. Learn to keep a healthy lifestyle – sleep, eat, relax, and do what you love on a regular basis. Try to structure your work. Are you wondering how to do it?

Movement
It may be difficult to stay active, especially with distance learning. You can go for a walk or a run outside, practice yoga at home with the help of videos available on Youtube, or try a different kind of workout at home.

Sleep
If you are having anxiety attacks before going to sleep or at any other time, try breathing or relaxation exercises (search the web for methods such as autogenic training by Schultz or Jacobson’s relaxation technique) and don’t underestimate having an appropriate room temperature and fresh air. Instead of watching influencers on social networks, try reading a few pages of your favourite book or listening to part of a podcast. For quick first psychological aid, you can use the Nepanikař (“Don’t Panic”) application (available in several languages), which is available for users with the iOS and android operating systems.

Food
It is best to eat regularly and in a balanced way. Supplement the necessary vitamins and essential nutrients. Don’t deny yourself your favourite food; what is important is eating it in a reasonable amount. If you don’t have access to a University canteen, try nearby restaurants. You can also try to save money for good food with the help of the Nesnězeno (“Not Eaten”) application. Alternatively, you can use the time spent at home to discover your own cooking skills.

Don’t be alone in this
Don’t stay alone in your sorrows and joys. Don’t let the thoughts running through your head overwhelm you. Stay in touch with your family, friends, and loved ones.
