The ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) focuses primarily on the scientific and research performance of individual universities. As ARWU indicators are based on absolute values, they tend to penalize universities with fewer students and employees.
The ranking was first published in 2003. Masaryk University has been ranked since 2017.
In the current ARWU ranking published in August 2023, Masaryk University is ranked 401st–500th, second within the Czech Republic. Masaryk University and Charles University are the only representatives in the TOP500 from the Czech Republic.
