What will you learn?

The Master’s degree program in the field of International Relations and European Politics aims to develop deeper understanding of international relations and European politics acquired by the students in prior Bachelor education. Special emphasis is laid on the ability to analyse, assess, interpret, and understand theoretical aspects of examined issues with systematic critical reflection in expert activities. Focus is directed particularly toward modern theories of conflict and cooperation, theories of European integration and international political economy. A progressive curriculum in soft skills and research methods in social science prepares students for high-quality expert analytical work in practice and academia. Structured emphasis on the development of students’ analytical skills throughout the program prepares students for success on the global labor market or postgraduate study among the global academic competition.


Practical training

Students of the field can electively participate in practical training with all types of potential employers. The department cultivates and continues to expand the existing rich offer of practical training opportunities for applicants.

The graduates can find employment in a number of professional areas. Especially: in public administration and diplomatic services, in research and analytical institutes, in academic-educational work at universities, in the apparatus of political parties, as journalists a and in international organisations. Graduates are very likely to find a job in the corporate sphere, particularly in large multinational organisations.

The program is open to students holding a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in the social sciences (political science, International Relations, European studies, and related disciplines, including history, law, economics, etc.) or the humanities from a recognized institution of higher education. Students are accepted on the basis of evaluation of their prior degree (Bachelor or higher) results, motivation letters and other documents specified on the web of the degree program. Entrance video-interviews are conducted subsequently. Applicants must have a good command of English.

Applicants are evaluated and admitted on the basis of the documents they submit and entrance video-interviews; the evaluation scale is 0 - 100 points with 60 being the passing level.

To be accepted, the applicant must have completed or be on track to complete bachelor level education (before enrollment). Each application must include English language curriculum vitae, cover letter, official transcript of records, proof of English language competence at the B2 level, and a sample of academic writing in the extent of an essay. The applications are processed and successful candidates from the first round are invited to an online video interview to review their application and verify their English language competence. Online video interview: 1) Applicants who pass the first round are contacted by the members of the admission committee and an online video interview is scheduled. The online video interview typically takes about 20 minutes and serves to clarify whether the applicant fits the program, whether the program is a good fit for the applicant, and to verify English language competence. 2) Applicants are given the opportunity to ask further questions they might have about the program at the end of the interview. 3) Online interviews may be replaced with in-person interviews if applicants are present on campus.

Recommended literature

Essay Submit an English language sample of your academic writing between 3000-4000 words (10-15 pages) that best represents your ability to analyze, critically assess, and synthesize a complex issue. Your writing sample should demonstrate the ability to work with abstract concepts and/or theories and the ability to analyze and critically assess issues. You are encouraged to submit a self-contained part of your Bachelor Thesis (chapter or two) or seminar output from a course. Please indicate the providence of the essay (e.g. written as a result of my Strategic studies class, part of my bachelor thesis). Should these not be available, please submit a newly written original essay on a chosen topic related to the program. Please adhere to citing and referencing standards to avoid any plagiarism.

Follow-up studies

The most promising graduates of the Master’s study programme of international relations and european politics will be ready to start postgraduate study (after meeting admission requirements) in the field or in related disciplines both at FSS MU and in the international competence. At FSS MU they are eligible to continue in the doctoral programme of International Relations and European Policy.
