Workshop Introduction to R for social sciences and humanities

Introduction to R Workshop (9:30-12:00):
R is a free and open-source environment for statistical analysis, graphing, and other tools. This workshop will be a casual introduction to the program. Purzycki will conduct the workshop specifically for those who have some background in statistics or data management already, but haven't quite yet or are just starting to take the plunge into R. The workshop will cover the very basics, perform some simple analyses of data, and introduce some functions and graphs. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops preloaded with both R and R Studio (although a text editor like Word is just fine too if you just want to take notes). You may download R here: https://cran.rstudio.com/ and R Studio here: https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/.

Free-List and AnthroTools in R Workshop (14:00-16:30):
Free-list methods are an excellent way to quickly get rich ethnographic and cognitive data on any given topic. However, the software typically used to analyze the data hasn't aged well, is not very user-friendly, and often fails when data sets are too large. This workshop will cover the ethnographic technique of free-list data elicitation and processing, as well as review the kinds of analyses one can do with such data. We will use specific examples in the workshop and highlight some of the features of the AnthroTools R package specifically designed for making comparative cognitive ethnography easier. Participants are encouraged to attend the introduction to R workshop if they do not already have some familiarity with R and are encouraged to bring laptops preloaded with R and R Studio if they wish, but neither are necessary. You may download R here: https://cran.rstudio.com/ and R Studio here: https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/.
