Description This analytic text first mentions the development of categorial systems for the assessment of the relationship between the textual and visual component in the context of Media Studies and History Teaching. It notes the traditional underestimation of study of the interpretation of the pictorial component in school practice and in the training of future teachers. It sees an impulse for change in the reforms to the educational system currently underway in the Czech Republic and in qualitatively new requirements for the development of key competencies and the content of transversal subjects, particularly Media Studies. It emphasises the importance of instructing the pupil in the process of selecting “historical photographs” and the possibilities available for their manipulation. It directs the pupil, in the early stages of teaching, primarily towards family photography, i.e. to history “on a small scale”, which he or she will later be able to integrate into history “on a large scale”, thereby developing his or her historical awareness. It presents photographs as a working material with an emphasis on the critical and analytical treatment of the observed information. The aim of the working approaches may also be quasi-synthesis – generalisation of the information discovered and its subsequent abstraction. It supports the thesis of development of the pupils capabilities of abstraction from specific depicted events to perception of universal categorial systems.
