| Description | This article deals with the novel Ein Buch für Hanna by Mirjam Pressler. First, attention is paid to further books of the same writer that deal with the topics of Holocaust and anti-Semitism. A more detailed comparison of the book under consideration and the earlier novel Malka Mai follows. After a short summary of the content of the novel Ein Buch für Hanna, the different literary techniques used to reflect the reality under the Holocaust are critically analysed. First, there are the citations of the fairy tales by H. Ch. Andersen that deepen the emotional plain of the narration in the novel; second, there are the monologues of the acting figures in the form of vivid speech, which extend the narration beyond the protagonist; third, the description of real events which took place in Bohemia during World-War II (e.g., the performance of Jan Krása’s juvenile opera Brundibár in the ghetto of Theresienstadt) is integrated into the narration. |
