Description Willow Gentian (Gentiana asclepiadea) is a protected species in the Czech Republic, occurring only in the Giant Mts., the Jizerské hory Mts., the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mts. and the Javorníky Mts. Its detailed distribution in the western part of the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mts. (based on the field mapping) and relations with various geographically structured ecological factors (using data sets converted and processed in the GIS environment) are presented here. Distribution of Willow Gentian appears to be strongly influenced by light and humidity conditions, Natura 2000 habitats and human activities. Generally, the Gentian has changing habitat preferences along the altitudinal gradient in the area of interest. On the mountain tops above approximately 1050 m a. s. l., rich in the moisture from precipitation, but relatively cold, it needs habitats with plenty of sunlight throughout the day. In the mid-altitudes it grows along roads, where light passes through gaps in forest canopy. Unlike this, in the lowest and warmest parts Gentian usually occurs in shaded habitats along streams and other shady wet places.
