| Description | The study attempts to define both the genre of the spiritually beneficial tale and the collections of the tales, and to describe its main features. The development of the genre from its emergence in the late 4th century until the 10th century is outlined and an attempt to set the Byzantine tales into the context of Byzantine and European literature is undertaken. The translation of four tales of John Moschus is added to the study, as a sample of the anthology of the genre (in preparation). |
