Citation
Description A death of a child in the perinatal stage of life is an abrupt interference in the identity of the woman, who, although she had become pregnant and went through the process of pregnancy and birth, has not "officially" become a mother. This type of loss is often bagatelized by family members as well as by health care personnell and other helping professionals. In this chapter the author describes the difficulties the women and their families have to face, and summarizes selected areas of intervention by helping professionals. The bereaved parents need help and support in the following four areas: emotional, pragmatic, informational and economic. The author also contemplates the significance of the funeral ritual, since it is indeed the farewell ritual which can help fathers of the children, other family members and other involved people to comprehend the depth and intensity of the loss experienced by the bereaved mothers.
