Description Smart meters and smart grids record detailed information about energy consumption. Electricity providers may therefore have detailed information about the private lives of the customers. According to Directive 2009/72/EC concerning common rules for the internal market in electricity, at least 80% of consumers in the EU Member States must be equipped by 2020 with smart meters. The paper discusses the possible consequences of such a penetration of smart grid for privacy.
