Description In the study the success of surgical and nonsurgical treatment in patients with advanced oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) was compared. Patients with HPV-associated tumors have a significantly better prognosis regardless of the type of treatment. The prognostic benefit of HPV positivity is probably not linked to the treatment modality. Although therapy protocols do not take HPV status into account yet, routine HPV testing of all OPC samples before therapy is highly desirable.
