Description Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is currently the 4th leading cause of death world wide, and increase of morbidity and mortality is expected till 2020. Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have an impact on the quality of life, declination of lung function and higher risk of morbidity and mortality. The direct and indirect costs of treatment can be expected to residue to the increase of morbidity and mortality. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease there fore remains a serious medical and socio-economic problem. It follows that the main goal of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatment is to prevent acute exacerbation or at least to reduce the rate of exacerbation, thus reducing the costs of treatment to a significant medical and pharmacoeconomic benefit.
